The Zoo sixth-time winner in People’s Choice Awards
New Zealanders have again votedThe Zoo television series about Auckland Zoo and its keepers and animals, the best reality series in the TV Guide’s “Best on the Box People’s Choice Awards”.
The 2006 award marks the sixth year in a row the Greenstone Pictures’ produced series has won this category. The Zoo gained over 37 per cent of the total vote for best reality series, which included Police 10-7, Piha Rescue, Borderline, Emergency, and Serious Crash Unit.
“We’re delighted for both Greenstone and the Zoo that the show has come out such a clear winner,” says Auckland Zoo director, Glen Holland. “It’s a real endorsement of the quality of the show, and of New Zealanders’ love for animals and the environment.”
“Viewers have recently watched the eighth series, which featured stories about everything from the rare native Archey’s frog and the endangered fairy tern, to the arrival of our cheetahs and tiger. Along with giving people an insight into the situation for some of these endangered species, we hope the show inspires New Zealanders to want to find more about these animals, and also how they as individuals, at a local level, can help,” says Mr Holland.
The Zooproducer, Rebecca Mellor, says Greenstone Pictures is thrilled to have won the award for the sixth year in a row. “As an accolade from the viewers themselves, it means a great deal to all of us on the Greenstone “zoo-crew”. Thank you to all who voted!”
“Many thanks also to the keepers and animals at the zoo for welcoming us for another year. We are very glad to be able to be able to bring stories to the screen that show the laughter, tears, hard work and absolute dedication of everyone working at Auckland Zoo. We are now filming for our ninth series and look forward to bringing more great zoo stories to viewers next year,” says Rebecca.
The Zoo is also a finalist in this year’s Quantas Television Awards, which are being held on Saturday 18 November.
