Wellington Zoo asks for consideration this Guy Fawkes
Wellington Zoo is asking neighbours in surrounding suburbs to think about its animals this Guy Fawkes night and not to let off fireworks near the Zoo, Wellington Zoo CEO Karen Fifield said today.
‘We’re asking the neighbours of the Zoo not to let off fireworks, but rather to enjoy the fantastic free Pelorus Trust Sky Show run by the Wellington City Council on Saturday night.’
‘All of our animals can get startled by the loud sudden noises made by fireworks. However this year we are especially concerned about our rare sun bear cub. The cub is still in the den with its mother Chomel.’
’Research shows that any stress to the sun bear’s mother may cause her to smother her baby and if anything happened to the cub, who has managed to survive six weeks so far, it would be disastrous,’ said Karen.
