Smaller rubbish bags hit the shelves

Smaller, cheaper pre-paid rubbish bags have hit the shelves as North Shore City Council phases out its coupon-based
rubbish collection system.
The new 40-litre rubbish bags appear to be popular with one Takapuna supermarket having to restock shelves soon after
the bags became available.
North Shore City Council's waste minimisation team leader, Bradley Nolan, says the smaller bags, which come with handles
or drawstrings in bundles of five, are perfect for residents with less rubbish.
"They are also easier to carry for people who found the larger, heavier bags difficult," says Mr Nolan.
While the pre-paid rubbish bags are preferable, Mr Nolan is quick to assure people that rubbish bags with coupons on
will continue to be collected.
"We will continue collecting approved bags with coupons until the coupons run out, but no new coupons will be put into
circulation," he says.
Following decreasing sales, collection issues and health and safety concerns, the council stopped producing pre-paid
coupons on 1 July in an effort to standardise the waste collection system and tidy up the city's streets.
