Additional motorway lane added to SH16 between Newton and Western Springs
Transit New Zealand has completed the westbound additional lane and bus shoulder of the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) between Newton Road and the Western Springs off-ramp. This is intended to free up the motorway by providing a dedicated exit lane for motorists travelling to Western Springs and St Lukes.
Starting today, motorists heading to Western Springs and St Lukes should move to the left lane to exit at the off-ramp for Western Springs and St Lukes. Overhead signs will direct them to the new exit lane. All other motorists heading west should stay in the centre and right lanes.
A new bus shoulder has also been completed and will be used as a bus priority lane during peak evening traffic.
The widened carriageway will create a safer, more efficient motorway. Resurfacing and concrete barriers along the edge of the motorway, will improve safety and help reduce traffic noise.
The project is part of the final stages of improvements taking place on Auckland’s Central Motorway Junction (CMJ), with the entire CMJ project due to be completed in mid December.
