Green Plumber now into seismic restraint work
A free public service encouraging people to contact the Kapiti Coast District Council to have household water leaks
repaired is to be extended into another area of need, seismic restraint installation.
Kapiti’s “Green Plumber” has proved a popular service with people who want to have their properties checked for leaks
and plumbing problems. They leave their names and details and the “Green Plumber”: arranges an appointment time to visit
and fix leaks free of charge.
“This service is working so well we’ve decided to extend the Green Plumber’s duties into another area of great need,
Seismic Restraint installation,” the Council’s Emergency Awareness Coordinator, Desley Monks, says.
“If the Kapiti Coast was hit by a large earthquake, many homes would be devastated inside and considerable injury would
be likely, especially in kitchen areas with heavy fridges, microwaves and freezers being thrown about. Restraining this
kind of furniture and equipment will not only save lives and injuries but limit the emotional and financial damage.
“It’s pretty devastating to see all your possessions lying destroyed around you.
“There’s a range of products available from local hardware stores which can be installed to prevent damage to your
family and furniture in a disaster.
“It includes hot water cylinder straps, wall unit brackets, television restraints, microwave oven restraints and
refrigerator restraints.
“What we propose is that Kapiti Coast District people who purchase any of these products call the Council on 296 4700
and arrange for their free installation,” Desley Monks says.
Products must be purchased by residents for free installation. The service is available only for residential users and
covers installation only. The plumber will contact all callers and carry out installations at his discretion.
