CONCERT
Wing Live at Nathan Homestead
You’ve seen her on South Park and TV One’s Closeup. Thousands have visited her website and now Wing brings her unique
singing style to Nathan Homestead.
She will be performing songs from her new CD ‘Breathe’ recorded recently at the Otara Music and Arts Centre (OMAC). The
concert will also feature songs from her popular “Wing Sings Elvis’ CD. A selection of Wings CDs will also be available
for sale.
With 12 solo CD recordings behind her Wing is an experienced performer. You can catch her live performance:

EXHIBITIONS
What’s Going On
Local contemporary artists Leilani Kake and Ema Tavola present their response to current events in Otara, Manukau City,
New Zealand and beyond.
Taking inspiration from Marvin Gaye’s 1971 politically charged anthem “What’s Going on” a musical commentary on
injustice, poverty, hatred and suffering, the artists aim to present and inspire dialogue about social and political
issues affecting their communities.
Rather than a static display, during the first two weeks the exhibition is a work in progress. Visitors can offer their
own social commentary as they watch the artists create their unique installation in the gallery.
This experimental project aims to highlight a broad range of artistic expression, using accessible materials to question
popular portrayals and stereotypes of Otara, South Auckland and urban Pacific and Maori communities.
The resulting political commentary will then be on display during the final week of the exhibition. The exhibition
culminates with a closing reception on Saturday 11 November from 1am to 1pm.

About the Artists:
Leilani Kake is a well known Otara artist specialising in video/performance installations. Previous works include; Te
Kiri Haehae/The Cutting of the Skin, (Re)locating Home and collaborating with Chilean Artist Juan Castillo in his work
as the 2006 Manukau School of Visual Artist in Residence. She holds a Batchelor of Visual Arts and Post-Graduate Diploma
in Fine Arts.
Ema Tavola is a sculptor, multi-media and textile artists. She is the Pacific Arts Co-ordinator for Manukau City Council
and has a Batchelor of Visual Arts degree majoring in sculpture from the University of Auckland.
The Real Fiji
Manukau Arts join forces with Auckland’s Fijian Community to celebrate Fiji Independence Day.
The Real Fiji is an exhibition of traditional and contemporary art forms by Fijian, New Zealand and Australian artists.
Many of the works are the product of recent art workshops held throughout Auckland and include Fijian mat weaving, quilt
making and the making of kesakesa (Fijian bark cloth).
Contemporary artists working in the mediums of poetry, photography, painting, body adornment and short film provide a
unique snapshot of visual expression from Fiji.

Workshop Styles
In this exhibition of paintings and mixed media works, artists Donna Tupaea and Nigel Borell are joined by secondary
school students from James Cook High School.
This exhibition is a culmination of a series of workshops in which Tupaea and Borell shared their techniques and
expertise with local students. The concept of 'light' as both medium and metaphor is explored and applied, according to
each of the student’s interpretation.
Workshop Styles is an exhibition that investigates contemporary Maori painting with a focus towards innovation.

MANUKAU ARTS EVENTS
LAST CALL FOR ENTRIES: MANUKAU’S VESSEL AND SCULPTURE AWARDS
The New Zealand arts community is invited to submit entries in the 2006 Manukau Vessel and Sculpture Awards. The awards
run by Manukau City Council’s are now in their 9th year and have continued to grow in stature.
The premier award carries a prize of $2500, second place $1000, third $750 and merit awards of $750 will be handed out
at the selector’s discretion.
This year’s guest selector is acclaimed Tongan/New Zealand artist and tutor Filipe Tohi. Filipe is a well-known sculptor
of wood, stone and steel. His current work explores the patterns and history of lalava - Pacific traditional cord
lashings.
Entries must be submitted by Thursday 26 October. The award ceremony takes place on 3 November. An exhibition of
selected work will follow at Nathan Homestead from 3 to 28 November.
