Mural adds finishing touches to new playground
Hastings District Council has now completed work on a new playground in Havelock North, and the finishing touches include a mural designed and painted by local school children.
The playground, at Anderson Park on Lipscombe Crescent, adds a much needed component to the district.
“We do have a lot of green space in Havelock North but until now we have lacked suitable play opportunities for small children and young teens,” said Antoinette Campbell, Community Development Manager at Hastings District Council.
The focus on children has been extended to the new mural which was designed and painted by 9, 10 and 11 year olds from nearby Lucknow School.
Jo Makinson, Lucknow School’s art teacher, believes the children involved in creating the mural for Anderson Park now have a sense of ownership over the park.
“The kids are very proud to be part of this project because they use this park, they come here with their families and now they have something here they can show people and say ‘I made that’.”
The mural will be unveiled by Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers at 10am on Saturday 14th October at Anderson Park.
