More sport and recreation for an active Auckland
Auckland City is playing a key role in getting more people, more active, more often with the launch of a new draft plan
on sport and physical activity in the city.
Auckland City’s Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee yesterday endorsed the plan for further targeted consultation.
The Sport and Physical Activity Plan sets out a range of targets and goals for increasing participation in sport and
physical activity for all Aucklanders. It sits within the context of the Auckland Regional Physical Activity and Sport
Strategy and outlines a clear framework for Auckland City’s involvement in sport and physical activity across the city.
“Auckland City’s role in providing for and encouraging the involvement in sport and recreation is part of our core
business,” says Councillor Penny Sefuiva, chair of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
“Healthy people contribute to a healthy city,” says Councillor Sefuiva. “We want to be able to provide people with
lifestyle choices which will make a real difference to the way they live.
Both plans have been developed through close consultation with the sport and recreation industry, regional sports
organisations providers of physical activity programmes and members of the health and education sector.
By drawing on a wide range of expertise these plans reflect the key elements of Auckland city’s physical activity needs
and provide some solid solutions to increasing the activity levels of a broad cross-section of our community.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to comment on the draft plan later this month, with the aim of having the
plan finalised by early 2007.
“Our investment in infrastructure and providing opportunities for participation in sport aim to give all Aucklanders
easy, safe and reliable access to physical activity that meets their needs and abilities,” says Councillor Sefuiva.
