CMJ traffic bulletin: Saturday 30 September until Thursday 5 October
Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Sunday 1, Monday 2, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) between Cook St off-ramp to Hobson St on-ramp southbound
Tuesday 3 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am on Wednesday
- Southern Motorway (SH1) between Cook St off-ramp to Symonds St on-ramp southbound
Ramp and link closures:
Saturday 30 September until Monday 2 October – CLOSED – over the weekend from 5pm on Saturday, all Sunday until 5am on Monday morning:
- Newton Rd on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Sunday 1 until Thursday 5 October – CLOSED – overnight from 11pm until 5am the following morning:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound to St Lukes Rd off-ramp
Sunday 1 until Thursday 5 October – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway ( SH1 to SH16 link) westbound
Sunday 1 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am on Monday:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound to Newton Rd of-ramp
Monday 2, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
- Hobson St on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Tuesday 3 October – CLOSED – overnight from 12.30am until 5am that morning:
- Hobson St on-ramp to Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound
Monday 2 until Thursday 5 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Port link eastbound
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16 to SH1 link) southbound
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St. The SH16 Newton Rd to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane westbound widening project is included in CMJ Stage 2 works.
The Public Information Centre at 13-19 Howe St, Freemans Bay is no longer open on a regular basis. Any member of the public who has concerns about or wishes to discuss aspects of the project may make an appointment by phoning 0800 CMJ CORE (0800 265 2673).
