City celebrates shield victory
September 25, 2006
North Shore City will celebrate its rugby success on Thursday with a street parade and the chance to meet the players and touch the coveted Ranfurly Shield.
A civic reception will be held by rugby-mad mayor George Wood at North Shore City Council’s head office in Takapuna before a parade down the main street at 12.30pm.
Mr Wood hopes everyone will take the opportunity to congratulate the team.
“I was at the game and wouldn’t have missed it for the world, but it’s equally important for the community to join in the celebrations,” he says.
“The team, like our city, has a lot of heart and we deserve to feel proud,” he says.
Players, supporters and sponsors will take to Hurstmere Rd to show off the Log o’ Wood, then travel through Milford, Mairangi Bay and Browns Bay on the way to North Harbour Stadium.
There will be some minor traffic disruptions in those town centres, but people are asked to be patient for this one in 21-year event.
At the stadium from 1.30pm people will have the chance to talk to the players, get autographs, take photos and get the closest they have ever been to the shield.
