Nelson Park Public Meeting
Hastings District Council will hold a public meeting to discuss the Nelson Park proposal ahead of the public referendum.
The meeting will take place at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House on Thursday, 5th October at 5.30pm. The doors will be open
from 5pm.
Hastings District Mayor Lawrence Yule will host the public meeting. He will be joined by Mark Clews, Hastings District
Council’s strategic development manager.
“We want everyone in our district to take part in the referendum to decide what happens to Nelson Park, and for them to
do that they must have all the facts on the issue. If the public has questions, this is the forum in which to ask them,”
said Mr Yule.
Hastings District Council is holding a public referendum to decide whether to sell Nelson Park and the adjoining part of
Caroline Road for a large format retail development and to apply the net proceeds of the sale to: 1. The establishment
of a replacement all-weather athletics track, together with a 1000-seat covered grandstand and associated facilities, as
part of a regional sports and recreation park on land owned by the Council in Percival Road; and, 2. The purchase and
development of public open space in the Hastings Central Business District (CBD) to the value of at least $3 million.
Voting papers will be delivered to all Hastings District electors between 19 th and 24th October. Voting closes at noon
on 9th November.
