Councils do not produce survival kits.
Christchurch City Council and Civil Defence have not produced an emergency survival kit for sale to householders in Christchurch.
“We have become aware that someone is going door-to-door in the city marketing survival kits,” says the Council’s Manager of Civil Defence and Emergency Management Murray Sinclair.
Residents who have called the Council have said the person claims to be working on behalf of the Council and Civil Defence.
“We do not have anyone representing the Council for Civil Defence purposes going door-to-door. Councils in New Zealand do not produce their own survival kits for on-selling,” says Mr Sinclair.
“We have not seen this particular survival kit so cannot comment on its contents. And, while we urge every household to be prepared for an emergency, we recommend anyone looking to purchase a kit, to check it out and be satisfied it meets their needs.”
Householders can prepare their own survival kits following the guidelines on the last page of the Yellow Pages phone directory or on the Get Thru website at www.getthru.govt.nz
