Community Planting Day at Charlesworth Wetland
Sunday morning and we all want some great outdoors: Take the dog for a run, then leave it at home, toss your spade, gardening gloves and gumboots in the car boot and head down to Charlesworth St off Ferry Rd for a community planting day on Sunday, September 24.
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai Trust have 1500 plants ready to thrive in the estuarine environment to create a marsh and coastal bush shrub-line between Charlesworth’s tidal wetland edge and the Linwood Canal.
Volunteers are asked to join with trust members, Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council and Honda to plant the shrubs and plants, which have been supplied by the Honda TreeFund and CCC.
The day runs from10.30 am to 12.30 pm with a lunchtime barbecue for the diggers. City Council coast care ranger and ornithologist Andrew Crossland will be on site to answer questions about local birdlife and the trust’s vision for Charlesworth wetland.
Trust board members will be on hand if people are interested in joining this charitable group that wants to see communities working together for clean water, open space, safe recreation and healthy ecosystems, which we all benefit from and enjoy.
Charlesworth wetland can be accessed from Charlesworth St off Ferry Road or from the Linwood canal bridge off Linwood Ave.
Bring your own gloves, spades and gumboots and please leave your dogs at home.
If bad weather forces a cancellation, move this date forward in your calendar to the following Sunday, October 1.
