Queen Of The Universe
The New Zealand AIDS Foundation, Eventimento & THE EDGE Public Programmes presents Queen of the Whole UniverseTM - A VERY QUEER BEAUTY PAGEANT
Lock up your wives, dust off your wigs, sharpen those stilettos and get ready for the return of a very queer beauty pageant
The grand spectacle created by NZ’s most fabulous divas returns to commemorate World AIDS Day this December, when Queen of the Whole UniverseTM throws open the doors of the ASB Theatre for a night of outrageous entertainment and high glamour.
Now in its 3rd successful year, this large-scale public event has become extremely popular with audiences, eager to see the catwalk burst into life with contestants that are not often give the chance to frock up, get glam and carry the banner of a nation. Most of the contestants in this pageant are men, all of whom chase the coveted tiara in the campest of drag ensembles.
“… charmingly choreographed and brazenly glamorous night to remember” – GayNZ.Com 2005
Queen of the Whole UniverseTM takes to the stage on a December 1 for World AIDS Day to raise funds for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation; committed to financially assisting important HIV/AIDS and community advocacy work not funded by its Ministry of Health contracts. Since premiering in 2004, Queen of the Whole UniverseTM has been enthusiastically supported by sponsors, participants and audience and in 2005 made the foundation just over $24,000 in fundraising revenue.
This year, the NZAF says, the pageant is promising more: More contestants, more countries represented and more competition. The 2006 pageant will take the audience on a universal tour including contestants from countries not representative before including Burkina Faso, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Miss World Wide Web is just one of the exotic entries that promise an unforgettable event.
The challenge of directing, training and managing thirty-four hopeful ‘queens’ in this year’s spectacular pageant is no daunting prospect for event organiser and international drag artiste - Jonathan Smith, who has been involved in creating the vision of many successful fundraising events for the NZAF. Over the last ten years his talents have in fact raised well over ½ million dollars to assist the foundation in supporting those people affected by in HIV.
More importantly, Smith is currently fending off a barrage of enquires from the public and media asking – “Will the reigning queen, Miss India, retain her crown, or will Miss Scotland blow her apart with her bagpipe routine? and “How many muscle boys are required to assist Miss Iceland, who suffers from snow blindness?”
