Mayor says electrification a "must have" for Auckland
Mayor of Auckland city Dick Hubbard says electrification of Auckland's rail system will be the biggest boost to improving the city's transport network in decades and welcomes ARTA's proposal for rail released today.
"Electrification of our rail system is a 'must have'," Mayor Hubbard said, "It is not a matter of 'if' but 'when'."
He said it was time to move away from our dependence on archaic diesel engines and rolling stock.
"I know the dollars are big, but there is no alternative" he said, "We desperately need a decent public transport system in Auckland and electric rail must be the backbone."
Mayor Hubbard said that electrification offered multiple benefits.
"It is a key to great urban design and enables speed, efficiency, better air emissions and gives the ability to put rail underground. We can't even consider starting to build an inner city loop until the decision is made."
"The Government has heard me and my colleagues championing this change. It is hugely encouraging that they are willing to engage in such a critical decision for our region."
