Addington street party to celebrate new streets and artwork
A street party is to be held in Addington this weekend to celebrate the completion of Barrie and Crohane streets and
their newly installed artwork, ‘Under the Eaves’, based on a quote from Peter Pan.
The event will be held this Saturday, 16 September from 5pm-6.30pm for residents and those involved in the project.
The street works are part of a neighbourhood cluster of works which include new walk and cycle connections as well as
the opening of Baxters Creek and new and enhanced recreation areas.
Many of the streets in the area were named in the 1880s after writers and poets and this has been developed into a
literary streets theme to help define and unify the neighbourhood.
Integrated artworks have been/are being designed under this theme and a series of brass plaques - with images copied
from the adjoining Addington Cemetery - have been made that will enable residents to follow a heritage trail through the
area
Kipling Street was the first street to be completed in this area. Art works are also being created for Ruskin Street
Reserve, Burke Street and Disraeli Reserve and they will be installed as works progresses over the next year.
- The event takes place on Saturday, 16 September from 5pm-6.30pm. The Riccarton Players will also act out some pieces
from Peter Pan, in costume. Artist David Lloyd will say a few words about the making of his artwork, a member from the
Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board will speak as will Mayor Garry Moore.
- Among the street residents attending will be one couple who have lived there for 60 years.
- If wet, the event will be held on Sunday, 17 September.
