Tri Star regional gymnastics centre progress jumps up
A new regional gymnastics facility at Keith Hay Park is becoming a reality for the Tri Star Gymnastics Club. Having reached a major milestone of raising $3.2 million and obtaining the necessary permits for the development, the club is ready to enter the construction contract.
This week Auckland City’s Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee congratulated the Tri Star Gymnastics Club on their perseverance and tremendous fundraising efforts to see this project come to fruition, and endorsed the release of $1 million for the project.
Committee chairperson, Councillor Penny Sefuiva says “It has taken no less than five years to reach this stage, and I am personally full of admiration for the commitment the Tri Star club has shown to this project.”
Auckland City is contributing $1 million from the Facility Partnership Scheme which is designed to support community projects that allow an agreed level of community access and use of their facilities.
“This new centre will be of huge benefit to the local and regional gymnastics community,” says Councillor Sefuiva. “I am sure there is a large pool of budding talent which will thrive with these new facilities.”
Construction of the new facility will commence in October 2006.
While the predominant user will be Tri Star, the community access agreement provides for public use and hiring of the facility.
Since the Facility Partnership Scheme was established in 1999, Auckland City has committed over $15 million of facility partnership funding to facilitate the development of over $40 million worth of community facilities.
Auckland City is also currently working with the Ministry of Education to ensure partnership projects on school sites to remain publicly accessible and of ongoing benefit to their communities for the life of the asset.
