Wellington Proves Tops In NZ Fitness Awards
The Wellington fitness industry has proven to be among the best in the country, with Bodyworks and personal fitness trainer Mish McCormack taking out top honours in the annual Fitness Life Awards.
At a ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency in Auckland, Bodyworks Wellington was named NZ Overall Winner of the NZ Fitness Centre of the Year Award, while personal trainer Mish McCormack also based in the city, was named NZ Overall Personal Trainer of the Year.
The panel of judges in the Fitness Life Awards 2006 included senior lecturer in exercise science at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Nigel Harris, broadcaster and former television exercise instructor, Suzy Clarkson (nee Aiken) champion multisport athlete Steve Gurney, and head judge Wendy Sweet. Sweet founded club-based personal training in New Zealand, and is a board member of the industry’s registration organisation REPs.
Sweet, said Bodyworks Wellington is an outstanding fitness business that works hard at understanding the true needs of its members and delivering products and services to meet those requirements.
“They understand that as motivators, staff and trainers are their most valuable asset. Bodyworks is seen by the community as a gym that really cares about helping people to achieve their fitness goals,” Wendy said.
“Equally, Mish McCormack has reached out from her role at Les Mills Wellington and is making a difference to the lives of many people in the community where fitness education is needed most.
“Mish’s long-term commitment to helping people change their lifestyles made her the stand-out winner of the Award. Her work in the gym, the community and the corporate sector, along with her personal and professional achievements, clearly put her ahead of the rest.”
The Fitness Life Awards, coordinated by Fitness Life magazine and endorsed by Fitness New Zealand, acknowledge the country’s top personal trainers, fitness and gym instructors, and fitness centres, as well as those who have made substantial contributions to community wellness.
Entrants in the 24 awards included a broad range of fitness centres, trainers and consultants.
Fitness Life publisher, Tania Greig, said the Awards, sponsored by Powerade, SunLatte, Health + Fitness Expo, NZSI, Leisureworld, AUT University and Musashi, are considered to be the benchmark for excellence within the close-knit and fast growing fitness industry.
“The health and fitness industry is one of New Zealand’s top industries, employing more than 5,000 staff throughout the country, and has an annual turnover of approximately $220 million,” she said.
“More than 400,000 people or 10.4% of New Zealanders belong to a health and fitness centre - the seventh highest rate in the world percentage wise.
“The Awards are a way of recognising those who have set high standards and consistently achieve them. They also acknowledge the time and effort individuals and organisations put into improving public health and fitness, and developing the industry as a whole. New Zealand is a world leader in terms of fitness industry developments.”
Tania said she is delighted with the standard of the Awards, and with the example that the winners set within the industry.
Her magazine, Fitness Life, founded in 2001, is now the top-selling fitness title in New Zealand, with a circulation base of 23,000 throughout New Zealand and Australia. The magazine has also recently secured distribution in Woolworths supermarkets across Australia.
