Step back in time with the Auckland Heritage Festival
Auckland's unique natural, social and built heritage will be celebrated with more than 100 events and activities during
this year's Auckland Heritage Festival.
The festival, which runs from 16 to 24 September, is part of Auckland City's long-term campaign to protect heritage
areas and buildings. It provides an opportunity for the public to celebrate their city's distinct heritage and brings
alive times and places of yesteryear.
Over nine days a diverse range of events will be on offer, most free of charge or for a small donation.
Highlights include: * opening day celebrations at the Viaduct * a town crier showcase in Aotea Square * Civic
Theatre open days * a co-ordinated ringing of church bells over Auckland * Heritage Auckland High Tea *
Auckland's historic moments on film at Auckland Art Gallery * Tamaki Hikoi: a Maori guided walk of Auckland *
Ports of Auckland heritage boat tour * Walking tours and self-guided walks of significant heritage areas across the
city * Heritage fashion displays, local talks and heritage market days.
This is the third consecutive year Auckland City has co-ordinated this celebration of the city's heritage.
Previously known as Heritage Week, the festival builds on the success of the past two years and has been extended over
two weekends so more people can enjoy it.
Chair of the Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee, Councillor Christine Caughey, encourages Aucklanders to
embrace this significant celebration of yesteryear.
"The Auckland Heritage Festival is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the rich history of Auckland's past. By
understanding where we have come from and who we are, we can build on a stronger sense of identity and belonging in this
beautiful city.
"There has been a ground swell of enthusiasm from organisations and individuals across the city, taking the initiative
and hosting events to make this year's programme even better than last year," says Ms Caughey.
