National Greens Select Committee On Council Rates Is Not The Answer.
The apparent deal between Nats and Greens to hold a select committee inquiry into council rates is only a partial answer to rates increases.
It will not deal with the central issue of an average 8% increase in rates this year – and an 8 or 9% increases next year, and the year after.
We need controls on rates increases now – not at the end of a select committee inquiry.
Parliament gave local authorities the power to get invloved in anythng they wanted to do – so now Parliament needs to curtail how much council can squeeze from ratepayers.
An inquiry to find out what is wrong is unnecessary - we know what is wrong, we need to find new ways to fund our councils, and to keep control over their expenditure.
Let’s have the select committee process – but based on the Rating Cap Bill.
