More than 1100 have their say on pedestrian bridge
More than 1100 people spoke up on whether they want a pedestrian bridge built over Wairau Stream.
North Shore City Council is considering putting in a crossing to give easy access from Beach Rd to Milford Reserve, and
as a result of ongoing requests from the public over many years.
North Shore City parks officer for Takapuna, John McKellar, says this is the most submissions received for a parks
project of this kind.
"We asked people whether they objected to a plan change that would allow a bridge to be built, and there is already
$1.1m allocated in the 2006 - 2016 Draft City Plan," he says.
"People also had the opportunity to tell us what they thought of seven concept designs that showed what the bridge might
look like."
Of the total number of responses, 65 per cent of people favoured a bridge being built. The design preference was for two
of the bridges located close to the weir.
"Those who were not keen to see the bridge go ahead were mostly concerned about the cost, and the effect on other users
of Milford Reserve," says Mr McKellar.
"Interestingly, submissions came from people across the city, not just in the local area."
Fifty-seven people who made submissions have asked to speak at a meeting of Takapuna Community Board on August 21.
