Community planting day at Whitireia Park
It’s planting time and Whitireia Park in Titahi Bay needs you!
A community planting day is planned for Sunday, August 20 starting at 10am, organised by the Whitireia Park Board and
the Department of Conservation.
Over 500 eco-sourced natives, including ti kouka (cabbage trees), flax and toi toi, will be planted in an effort to
revegetate the area as in days gone by, Whitireia Park Board chair Allan Ross said.
“It’s a great way for the community to get involved and contribute to the greening of their park. It’s the first stage
of restoration in an area from where stock were recently removed and the planting will enhance this focal point of the
park”.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the main car park by the beach and bring a spade and gloves if possible. A sausage
sizzle will be provided. Planting efforts will concentrate in a swampy area below a native bush remnant so gumboots are
advised!
Whitireia Park, in Porirua city, is a headland with commanding views over Mana Island, Porirua Harbour and its environs.
The park comprises around 180 hectares of predominantly open space grasslands with a remnant patch of native bush.
Administered by the Whitireia Park Board as a recreation reserve, it provides a unique opportunity for people to
undertake a variety of leisure activities, such as walking, mountain biking and fishing. ENDS
