Edgeware Pool closure the only option
The Christchurch City Council is standing by its decision in the 2006-16 Long Term Council Community Plan to close
Edgeware Pool as it is the only feasible option for the facility.
An independent engineer’s report presented to Councillors earlier this year said that Edgeware Pool, which is over
70-years-old, has reached the end of its useful life and is beyond repair.
It could cost up to $1.6 million to replace the pool.
“During the LTCCP process we had very open and honest discussions with the community,” Mayor Garry Moore said. “We have
considered all the options surrounding the future of Edgeware Pool and the only one that is viable is to close the
facility.
“The pool is constantly being filled as it has continuous leaks which are polluting the ground and have even flooded a
neighbour’s property. As well, the Edgeware Pool is poorly patronised and by comparing admissions to operating costs, it
cost $16.49 for each of the 3000 public swims in 2004/05.”
The staff at Christchurch City Council are currently assessing whether it is possible to extend the St Albans school
pool. This assessment has not been completed, but when it has discussions can commence with the local community.
