New Era at The Hub

Published: Tue 25 Jul 2006 04:44 PM
Some big changes are in store for Nelson’s youth centre, The Hub. New manager, Maxine Cook says The Hub will undergo a major refurbishment during September.
“We’ll be staying open, but in October we will be re-launching The Hub with a new style that will build on what is already here, but will be more professional and welcoming to all Nelson youth and their parents as well as to other youth focussed service providers,” she said. “We intend The Hub to become just that – a Hub – a central place that offers something to every young person in Nelson, with its combination of recreation, education and career development, it will be a safe place for youth to come and be who they are.”
Ms Cook and her team will also be developing an exciting events programme for the summer. The new manager is a Kiwi who has recently returned from the UK where she has been working with a multi-disciplinary team as a young people's specialist substance misuse worker in the Midlands. Hub trust chair Annette Milligan says Ms Cook is used to working in a holistic, multi-agency environment with a focus on young people.
“Maxine understands the needs of young people, and the need to involve them at every level of what the Hub offers. She is looking forward to the challenges of working with Nelson youth, as she settles into the role of manager at a critical phase of re-development of The Hub.”
Community support will be needed for the September refurbishment. Contact The Hub if you can help with time or materials.
