CMJ traffic bulletin: Saturday 22 July until Thursday 27 July
Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Sunday 23 until Thursday 27 July – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) between Nelson St off-ramp and Fanshawe St on-ramp northbound
Sunday 23 until Thursday 27 July – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound between Cook St off-ramp and Hobson St on-ramp
Ramp and link closures:
Sunday 23 until Thursday 27 July – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Wellington St on-ramp to Northern Motorway (SH1) northbound
Sunday 23 until Tuesday 25 July – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
- Newton Rd on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Newton Rd off-ramp citybound
Monday 24 until Wednesday 26 July – CLOSED – overnight from 11pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to St Lukes Rd off-ramp westbound
Wednesday 26 July – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am on Thursday:
- Port to Northwestern Motorway ( SH16) and Wellesley St on-ramp westbound link
Wednesday 26 July – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am on Thursday:
- Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway (SH1 to SH16 link) westbound
Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 July – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Nelson St off-ramp citybound
Thursday 27 July – CLOSED – overnight from 11pm until 5am on Friday:
- Hobson St on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St. The SH16 Newton Rd to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane westbound widening project is included in CMJ Stage 2 works.
The Public Information Centre at 13-19 Howe St, Freemans Bay is no longer open on a regular basis. Any member of the public who has concerns about or wishes to discuss aspects of the project may make an appointment by phoning 0800 CMJ CORE (0800 265 2673).
