Open day to discuss Northern Arterial Route
Hastings District Council’s plans for a new arterial road linking Havelock North to the Expressway are to be the subject
of a public open day on July 15.
The proposed ‘northern arterial route’ is intended to take traffic out of urban streets to relieve congestion ahead of
the city’s projected growth.
The need for an arterial road north of Hastings was first identified as part of the Hastings-Napier Expressway
preparations, in a 1980 transport strategy. It found the benefits of having fewer vehicles moving through the city would
include accident reductions and savings in travel time and petrol.
The Council has spent a number of years investigating the project, weighing up various options for where to place the
new road. Now, based on a range of reports and technical assessments carried out over the past few years, the Council
has settled on a preferred route.
The route would connect a number of smaller roads together, as well as creating a significant new stretch between Karamu
Road North and Crosses Road.
From the Expressway to Havelock North, the route takes Evenden Road, runs parallel to Coventry Road and Kenilworth Road,
and then runs from Karamu Road to Crosses Road, which connects to Napier Road.
The Council will undertake a public consultation and hearing process concerning the corridor of land which has been
identified for the new road. It will also apply to the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council for resource consents relating to
water/drainage and sediment control.
