Wairarapa flood event – update no. 9
Greater Wellington staff continues to closely monitor river levels throughout the Wairarapa following heavy rain
yesterday and today.
The latest MetService report remains the same as at the 1.00pm media release. It is predicting further rainfall in the
12 to 16 hour period from 8am today with 80 to 100 mm possible about the eastern hills and the Tararuas. In lower lying
areas south of Pahiatua 40 to 60mm is possible. Intensities will be mostly around 3 to 6mm per hour but 8 to10mm per
hour at times in the hills.
Rain should ease in areas north of Martinborough by late afternoon but lasting overnight in areas farther south.
River levels are currently holding steady. However these are likely to rise given the predicted rainfall forecast. With
the ground already very sodden, people in these areas should watch out for rising rivers and streams. The situation will
continue to be monitored.
Local councils are continuously assessing roads. The public are advised to contact their local district council office
for more detailed information on road closures. Information is also available online at www.wrcdemg.govt.nz

In all Wairarapa districts there are still many road closures in place due to surface flooding. Drivers are urged to
take extreme care on all roads and drive to the conditions.
