Land Transport Programme significant step forward for development of Auckland transport
The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) today jointly released its 2006/07 Land Transport Programme (LTP) in
Auckland in partnership with Transit’s 10-year 2006/07 State Highway Plan and Forecast.
The 2006/07 Auckland Land Transport Programme outlines Auckland’s key non-state highway transport projects for the
coming year and is the first integrated programme of transport activities ever produced for the Auckland region.
ARTA’s Acting Chief Executive, Fergus Gammie, said, “ This is a first for the Auckland region and represents a
significant step forward in the development of a co-ordinated transport programme for the Auckland region.
“This also represents a partnership approach with Transit in respect to integration between local roading and State
Highway developments for Auckland. Instead of nine individual programmes of transport activity for Auckland, for
2006/07, we have two”.
Mr Gammie said, “Historically, Auckland has suffered from a lack of integration in transport activity planning. This has
meant localisation and fragmentation of approach as opposed to a big picture regional approach which not only best
utilises available funding but means a co-ordinated approach to moving forward with the development of Auckland’s
transport system.
“As Auckland’s transport agency, ARTA worked in consultation with the region’s seven territorial authorities to collate,
assess, evaluate and prioritise Auckland’s transport activities for 2006/07”, said Mr Gammie.
Key Auckland projects included in the 2006/07 Auckland Land Transport Programme include:
- Continued construction of the Northern Busway and stations
- Central Transit Corridor
- construction of Tiverton Road/Wolverton Street to link with SH20 Mt Roskill extension
- Te Atatu Road Improvements to improve the connection between Te Atatu Road and the Northwestern motorway
- Improvements to Neilson Street to improve access in the Onehunga-Pakuranga Corridor.
Key expenditure items for Auckland for 2006/07 include:
- $291m for improvement and replacement of local roads in Auckland
- $151m for passenger transport services
- $150m for local road maintenance
- $101m for Passenger transport infrastructure
- $11.6m for Transport Demand Management
- $10.6m for walking and cycling projects.
