Scallops Galore
With only eight weeks to go until Saturday 26 August, it's time to
take a look at what some of the 50 stands will be tempting us with on
the day:
-Scallops sauteed in vermouth cream and dill in a filo pastry case
(from Whitianga's Captain Cook Restaurant)
-Crayfish and scallop sushi as well as scallop mussel pate stuffed
potatoes (from Coromandel Town's Peppertree Resaurant)
-Scallops on a rosemary skewer with lime/caper mayo (Outside Cuisine
from Thames)
-Scallops flamed in midori with strawberries and coconut (O'Mara's
Restaurant from Matarangi)
-Scallop Laksa (from The Fireplace, Whitianga)
-The Japanese Society of Mercury Bay will be serving up Okonomiyaki,
a popular Japanese fritter
-tuatua and mussel fritters (from tuatua, Whitianga)
For those that are a little more game, what about trying some Kina
Roe from Sea Urchin NZ?
BANDS ANNOUNCED
We've confirmed the majority of the bands who will be performing at
the festival, some of the highlights include:
Kokomo - This popular 6 piece blues band has been touring NZ for 15
years now and recorded seven albums in between. They are renowned for
dynamic live shows and smart distinctive song-writing, as well as the
band’s unique harmonica / trumpet horn section.
dDub - After playing many of NZ's major festivals over the last few
years, and getting rave reviews for their live performances, dDub
have recently released their debut album onto the NZ charts. Keep
an ear out for their single 'Comfort' on the radio and get your
dancing shoes ready for this electric 6 piece band from Auckland.
Gahu - were a popular band at the festival last year, a 7 piece Afro-
Kiwi jazz band which includes drums and percussion from several
continents, saxophones, trumpet, guitars and bass to create a
carnival atmosphere of rhythm and improvisation.
We've got plenty more bands, ranging from 60's rock n roll, to Irish
and more blues and jazz. This year we have two live music stages,
and another stage which will have a mix of music and cooking demo's
and competitions.
ODE TO THE SCALLOP
Over 60,000 scallops will be sacrificing themselves for our
enjoyment, it's only fair we pay them a good tribute on the day!
It's time to get the pens out and start composing your 'Ode to the
Scallop.'
You can enter on the website, www.scallopfestival.co.nz , and the six
best will be asked to come on stage to recite their Odes, and a range
of prizes will be awarded to the best. Keep an ear out for a few of
them on The Breeze (Our Official Station) and Coromandel FM.
While you are on the site, why not enter the Battle of the Barbeques
which will this year be judged by our celebrity chef. We'll let you
know just who that is very soon and of course will have plenty more
news as we build up to the festival - so stay tuned.
