Big splash for Otahuhu and Avondale pools
Auckland City’s Combined Committees meeting last week approved $20.4 million for the development of new swimming pools
for Otahuhu and Avondale.
The Otahuhu project will receive $9.9 million, while Avondale will get $10.5 million.
“These two new facilities will be welcome additions to the local communities,” says Arts Culture and Recreation
Committee chairperson, Councillor Penny Sefuiva.
“These projects are in line with Auckland City’s commitment to providing for more outdoor, active lifestyles for all
Aucklanders.”
They also reflect Auckland City’s swimming pool strategy, which guides our involvement in providing, developing and
managing swimming pools across the city.
Recent population growth in Otahuhu and Avondale means more recreational and community facilities, including swimming
pools, are needed.
“We are meeting the needs of local communities with these developments to ensure that recreational facilities are
close-by, accessible and build a sense of community,” says Councillor Sefuiva.
Planning for the pool in Otahuhu will begin in the new year. The Otahuhu pool is the second phase in an overall 20-year
recreation precinct development for the area, which included the opening of a brand new recreation and youth centre in
April this year.
Further development plans for the precinct will include a library and community centre.
Auckland City is currently trying to identify a suitable site for the Avondale swimming pool. Ideas for potential sites
will be shared with the Avondale community before any decision on location is made.
