Please give to the food appeal this Saturday
If you’re heading to the supermarket this Saturday remember to give generously to the Wellington’s winter food appeal for the regions food banks.
Downtown Community Ministry volunteers will be collecting at Newtown and City New World’s from mid morning right through till just before dinner and shoppers are being told that “every little bit helps”.
“We’re hoping for a big take on Saturday,” says DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre.
“Ideally, we’ll get enough food to last throughout the winter”.
On average, DCM prepares over 30 food parcels for its clients each week.
Miss McIntyre says winter places extra pressure on clients to make budget each week, “Our client’s have very little cash at the end of the week and often face the decision of making a choice between putting the power on to cook, having a hot shower or putting a heater on. It’s a trade off between different things we’d consider essential so if we can help by supplying sufficient food then it may make the other decisions easier.”
Shoppers on Saturday are requested to buy an extra something to contribute. Suggested items include: Cereals; Pastas and rice; sandwich spreads; tinned fish; veggies and fruit and prepared packet meals.
Should people not be able to give at Saturday’s appeal DCM will gladly accept, and may pick up, donations around the city.
The food appeal is being sponsored by Newstalk ZB.
