Work on Paekakariki seawall commences
Seawall restoration work will start this weekend and continue next week on The Parade, Paekakariki, Kapiti Coast
District Council Community Assets & Services Manager, Rob Williams said today.
“The Kapiti Coast experienced high winds, large swells and high tides for a period of two to three days earlier this
month.
“Various amounts of erosion occurred along our coastline from Waikanae Beach through to the southern end of Paekakariki.
The areas around Marine Parade at Paraparaumu and the unprotected section of coastline at the northern-end of The Parade
at Paekakariki suffered the most wave damage.
“Substantial damage occurred at the northern-end of The Parade at Paekakariki. Erosion is most severe in the carpark
area and in some places is now within two metres of the road carriageway so that urgent remedial is required.
“As an interim measure, rock will be placed at the toe of the erosion scarp starting on Monday, June 19 2006 with the
work expected to take about a week. Rock for the work has already been placed there.
“Once the initial protection is provided, we’ll look at re-engineering the protection works so they’re aligned with the
Long Term Council Community Plan decision which is to construct a rock toe protected dune similar to that at Marine
Parade at Paraparaumu.
The section of the dune restoration project on Marine Parade, Paraparaumu which is currently unprotected by rock,
suffered some damage both to the north and south of the rock protected area.
The level of the beach across the entire site was lowered by about half a metre due to the high waves and storm
conditions. This eroded away the toe of the dune and creating an escarpment up to one metre high in places and exposing
the roots and spinifex runners, however, only a few plants were lost before the sand was replaced at the toe of the dune
to protect the planting.
This work was carried out by Kapiti Roadmakers under our existing resource consent and, other than some minor fencing
repairs, is completed.
