Farewell to Russell Road pool
Work begins this week on the demolition of the old Russell Road swimming pool in Manurewa.
After 31 years of providing fun and activities for the families of Manurewa, the Russell Road pool was closed to the public on 9 May 2005.
This followed community consultation on the need for improved facilities for the area, resulting in the construction of Manurewa Aquatic Centre - Ngaa Mahi a Rehia. The new centre opened on 16 July 2005 and includes a learn to swim pool, leisure pool, six lane FINA accredited indoor pool, splash pool and state of the art fitness centre.
The demolition work begins on 19 May and is scheduled for completion by end June 2006. The site will then be reinstated as a reserve.
Cr Colleen Brown, Manurewa Councillor and member of the Community Development Committee says:
“The old pool served the community for many years and local people will have fond memories of time spent there. We hope they have now had a chance to visit the impressive new aquatic centre at Mountfort Park which has everything the old pool did, and more, including a learn to swim pool and state of the art fitness centre.”
