CMJ traffic bulletin: Saturday 13 May until Thursday 18 May
Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Sunday 14 until Thursday 18 May – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) northbound between Symonds/Port/Wellesley St off-ramp and Wellington St on-ramp
Sunday 14 until Wednesday 17 May – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound between Cook St off-ramp and Hobson St on-ramp
Ramp and link closures:
Sunday 14 until Thursday 18 May – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway (SH1 to SH16 link)
- Southern Motorway (SH1) off-ramp citybound to Nelson St
Sunday 14 until Thursday 18 May – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm until 5am the following morning:
- Gillies Ave on-ramp to Southern Motorway (SH1) northbound
Monday 15 until Wednesday 17 May – CLOSED – overnight from 11pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Hobson St on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 May – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
- Newton Rd on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Sunday 14 and Monday 15 May – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm until 5am the following morning:
- Western Springs on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound
Sunday 14 and Monday 15 May – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) citybound to Newton Rd off-ramp
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St. The SH16 Newton Rd to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane westbound widening project is included in CMJ Stage 2 works.
