Councillor Condemns Graffiti Mural in Manukau
Manukau City Councillor Dick Quax is aghast that the TelstraClear Pacific is promoting a massive graffiti mural.
The Council through the Manukau Beautification Trust spends about $1 million a year of rate payer’s money getting rid of
graffiti and the Trust that built TelstraClear Pacific is being totally irresponsible in promoting this graffiti, says
Cr Quax.
“It’s not a good look when a Trust which has received over $30 million in money and land from Council to build this
facility acts in a manner which is an affront to both the Council and our community.”
“The Council currently has a Local Bill before parliament to try and come to grips with this major social problem and
this promotion of graffiti will not help the cause.”
I am unhappy that graffiti is being promoted as part of the South Auckland culture. In the Quality of Life Survey in New
Zealand’s Eight Largest Cities 2003 the graffiti problem was cited by Manukau residents as their number one reason for
the low sense of pride that they have in Manukau City, says Cr Quax.
