Auckland Airport Goes Wi-Fi
Auckland Airport's wireless computer network has been expanded with wi-fi now available in the Emirates Lounge as well as 'hotspots' in public spaces in the international and domestic terminals.
At the international terminal, public area hotspots are located around Café Down Under and the Jean Batten foodcourt (landside) and much of the new departures retail area (airside).
Domestic hotspots are available in the gate lounge next to gates 29 and 30 in the Air New Zealand terminal, and in the gate lounge of the Qantas terminal.
Auckland Airport head of IT and telecommunications, Tony Wickstead, says, "This is just the first stage of a continued rollout that will see wi-fi technology available in more areas of the airport over time."
Wi-fi technology has been available for a number of years, but the airport says that due to the nature of the facility and the wide range of applications and users, it was important to carefully evaluate the options and ensure the most reliable environment was established.
"In the month that wi-fi has been available, we have seen a very positive uptake of this new service to passengers."

Information for journalists: Wi-fi, or 'wireless fidelity' is an international standard in telecommunications using the 802.11 frequency in small high-speed patches, rather than large cellular zones. Many new devices such as laptop computers and personal digital assistants come wi-fi enabled. Users are able to access the internet, email and their office networks through secure broadband connections in cafes, bars, service stations and other retail outlets.
