Millions of books borrowed
Every year people in North Shore City borrow three million books from seven council libraries and the mobile library - as well as cds, dvds, puzzles, toys and magazines.
They can also access electronic databases and catalogues, through the reference service and learning centres in the libraries, or from home at www.shorelibraries.govt.nz
North Shore City Council's community services and parks committee chairwoman, Margaret Miles, says libraries give everyone the opportunity for leisure and education.
"In the coming year we'll spend $6.6m on our popular libraries - $1.2m on new library books alone," Councillor Miles says.
That is in the council's 2006-2016 Draft City Plan, which is currently out for public consultation. It sets out future direction, priorities and costs of running the city over the next 10 years.
The major project in the coming year will be the planning the extension of Devonport Library, into the former visitor information centre on Windsor Reserve. Construction on the $1m project is expected to begin in 2007.
As well as library services, North Shore City Council also provides leisure services, housing for older people, and North Shore Memorial Park.
About 600 people aged 60 years and older are housed in rental and own your own home units across the city, and $143,000 is budgeted in the Draft City Plan to pay for the maintenance programme in the coming year.
The proposed rate rise would be 8.9 per cent in the first year of the plan, and 7.1 per cent each year over the following nine years.
People can have their say on the 2006-2016 Draft City Plan until 5pm on April 26, either by filling in the reply-paid submission form that arrived in their letterbox with the summary newsletter, or online at www.northshorecity.govt.nz
The form can also be used to nominate a time to present to the council's hearings committee, which will meet in May and June. Any changes will be reflected in the final, approved plan, which will be adopted on June 30.
People who did not receive their newsletter can call Actionline on 486 8600.
