Delays likely at Beach and Mairehau Roads intersection
Christchurch City Council advises delays are likely for road users next week at the intersection of Beach and Mairehau
Roads.
Work at the intersection, to connect the new constructed Belfast sewer pipeline to the city’s sewer system, will start
on Monday 10 April and is expected to be completed on Thursday 13 April.
“The two traffic lanes along Mairehau Road will be maintained but will be narrowed at the intersection, and traffic will
be required to slow down,” says Mike Kininmonth, the Council’s capital works coordinator.
“To assist the traffic flow a detour will be in place for traffic travelling west along Beach Road toward Mairehau Road.
It will be directed right into Donnington Road, left along Cottonwood Street and into Tapiri Street. At the intersection
drivers will be able to turn left or right into Mairehau Road.”
Also during this period:
- Northbound Mairehau Road traffic will not be able to turn right into Beach Road
- Two bus stops, one on Beach Road and the other on Mairehau Road, will be affected and moved a few meters along the
road
- The deviations will be in place both day and night
Pipeline Background
Originally scheduled for 2009 the pipeline is being constructed from Belfast to Frosts Roads, where it will connect with
the city’s wastewater system. The work has been brought forward partly due to the fast pace of development in and around
Belfast.
Although Belfast has its own wastewater treatment plant, considerable upgrading would be required soon if it was to meet
the standards necessary for the increased volume associated with the Belfast population growth.
Current upgrading of the Christchurch wastewater treatment plant will improve water quality and increase capacity –
sufficient to meet the growing needs of both Christchurch and Belfast.
The Belfast pumping station will also be upgraded as part of this project.
The project is scheduled for completion in June 2006.
