Work begins to make safe private properties in Sandilands, Chch
Work has begun to make safe the soil on a dozen private properties in the Christchurch suburb of Bromley, the
Christchurch City Council says.
Contractors will be moving equipment into the area over the next few days and, if the weather is favourable, it is
expected the work will be completed over the next three months.
The dozen properties are among 93 on the former Sandilands landfill site that were originally tested for soil
contaminants. Of those, the 12 properties were recommended for treatment to deal with contamination.
In November last year the Council decided to go ahead with the work after hearing that a central government fund
administered by the Ministry for the Environment would contribute $212,500 of an expected total remediation cost of
$806,000.
Sandilands covers 12.5ha in the east of the city that was once a Council landfill. It was covered and developed for
housing just after the World War II.
