Local water supplies measure up
Water users on 'town' supply in the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wellington can rest assured that their water measures up to
health standards says the region's bulk water supplier, Greater Wellington.
The move comes in response to reports yesterday that some New Zealanders are drinking water that is either not monitored
properly for E.coli bacteria or cryptosporidium, or isn't up to standard. These reports arose from publication of the
Ministry of Health's Annual Review of Drinking-Water Quality in New Zealand 2004.
Rex Kirton, chairman of Greater Wellington's Utility Services Committee, said that quality assurance was central to
managing the collection and treatment of water for the region's cities.
"A safe and reliable water supply is fundamental to our region's health. Our goal is to meet the health standards for
drinking water and we always do that."
Greater Wellington uses a range of quality management measures for its bulk water supply operation, including continuous
monitoring systems at its treatment plants.
The treated water supplied to Hutt, Porirua, Upper Hutt and Wellington city councils fully meets the microbiological and
chemical compliance requirements of New Zealand's drinking water standards.
