Next lap in Speedway review
Public submissions on the operation of the Western Springs speedway have closed and are currently being reviewed by an independent commissioner.
A total of 233 submissions were received and represented a wide variety of views.
The submissions are part of an independent review of the environmental effects of Speedway agreed on by Speedway, Auckland City and local residents to guide decision-making in the future.
Auckland City encouraged the public to share their views and comments on:
o noise levels
o noise monitoring
o noise attenuation (minimising) mechanisms
o number of events per season
o event timing, and
o any other effects.
The commissioner will be in touch with submitters if he requires any further clarification or information regarding their submission.
Section 16 of the Resource Management Act requires that the emission of noise from speedway does not exceed a reasonable level. The review process is looking into the effects of the operation of Speedway in the hope of determining the best practicable options for the future.
Independent specialists in acoustics and mechanical engineering are advising the commissioner throughout the assessment process.
The commissioner will make recommendations on the best practical options for speedway at Western Springs. It is anticipated that the commissioner's report will be completed by the end of May.
