Engage yourself at South Library
Three months before its installation, Christchurch residents are getting a sneak preview of Graham Bennett's art work
Engage at South Christchurch Library.
Models and working drawings of the sculpture have gone on display in the library foyer until mid March.
Engage will invite the viewer to observe or discover the human geographic, climatic and cultural dimensions of the
library within the context of the district, province and time - past and present, said Graham Bennett.
"It also allows the viewer to consider the interplay of physical structures, social constructs, intellectual notions;
dynamics of balance, change and reflection."
Engage will be Graham Bennett's third public art work to be installed in Christchurch. His Reasons for Voyaging
sculpture provides a monumental entrance to the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, while his A Tribute to
Firefighters on the banks of the Avon River, is made from materials sourced from the World Trade Centre site and was
gifted to the City.
His art works are also in Kurashiki, Christchurch's sister city in Japan, and in a number of private sculpture parks in
New Zealand.
Engage is funded by the Christchurch City Council's Artworks in Public Places Fund.
Installation of Engage will begin outside the South Christchurch Library in May, with the unveiling expected a month
later in June.
