Talbot and Kotuku park names take flight in Glen Innes
Names for the two modified parks along Pt England Road and Apirana Avenue in Glen Innes have been approved by Auckland
City's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
The larger northern park will continue to be known as Talbot Park, while the smaller southern park will be called Kotuku
Park, which supports the theme of the Glenn Innes town centre redevelopment.
A public competition to name the two parks was held in September 2005. Everyone who sent back the renaming cards went
into the draw to win a $200 supermarket voucher. There were 140 entries, with a clear majority preferring the name
Kotuku. The winner of the competition was Selwyn Austin.
Chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, Councillor Penny Sefuiva, says it was great to get the
community involved in the renaming process.
"The renaming competition for the reserves has given the Glen Innes community an opportunity to get involved in the
redevelopment process, and helps to foster a greater sense of ownership," says Ms Sefuiva.
Redevelopment of the two parks will be completed in 2007. The northern Talbot Park will have skate facilities and a
children's playground. The new southern Kotuku Park will be more suited to passive recreation like walking.
