Newmarket Viaduct improvement project moves forward
Transit New Zealand's project to upgrade the Newmarket Viaduct has taken a significant step forward this week with the
Auckland City Council giving the public the opportunity to submit on plans to replace the existing structure.
Submissions from the public will be heard at a council hearing scheduled for April this year.
This follows the council's acceptance of Transit's Notice of Requirement to alter the motorway's designation for the
proposed works, which was lodged last November.
"This is an important milestone for the project and marks another step towards the completion of the motorway
improvements around the central area of Auckland," says Transit regional manager, Richard Hancy.
Mr Hancy says the intention, subject to any hearing outcomes and land acquisition issues, is to begin construction work
in 2008. Most of the land required for the project is already owned by Transit.
The project involves replacing the existing viaduct with a new structure incorporating an additional southbound lane
that will then extend through to Greenlane.
