Stage set for Auckland's monster music birthday bash
Auckland City is putting on four days of free music festivities to celebrate Anniversary Weekend, including a street
dance party, jazz and classical concerts, and some top Kiwi bands jamming in parks.
The action is spread citywide from Friday night to Monday evening:
Get your dancing shoes on for Auckland's biggest free street party on Friday 27 January with some serious rock 'n' roll
sounds from Pluto, fuzzy guitar rock from Bored Gordon, a scoop of post-punk goodness from The Vacants, and some
barbershop-garage-psychedelic-blues-surf-jazz-devonport-core from Smokefree Rock Quest winners, The Electric
Confectionaires. Dancing in the Street, hosted by Nick D, will be held from 8pm to midnight in closed-to-traffic Lorne
Street, in front of the Auckland Public Library.
Waiheke celebrates hot New Zealand talent on Saturday 28 January at "Waiheke's Little Day In" free concert from 4pm
onwards at Onetangi Sports Park. Headlining are Pluto, with help from Spacifix, Goon, and The Electric Confectionaires,
and there's a great local line-up featuring Offbeat Crew Charlie & Eric, Muthertung, Emeree Reweti, Sam Owen, Vrnda Torckler & Ben Blain, Genevieve, Repitwahh and 11-year-old singer-songwriter Ben Kara.
Enjoy a Sunday picnic at the ever-popular Montana Jazz at the Rotunda and Drake Concert Series concerts at the Auckland
Domain. This weekend features smooth jazz from Four Sisters - The New Women of Jazz starting at 2pm and the quirky brass
sounds of the Dominion Centenary Concert Band from 4.30-6pm.
And to finish the weekend on a high note, a 6,000 strong crowd is expected to be jammin' to the sounds of Steriogram,
Nesian Mystik, Goodnight Nurse, and My Life Story at Pt Chevalier on Monday 30 January. The free Edge Jam in the Park
concert will be held in Coyle Park, Point Chevalier from 2-6pm.
Auckland City Music in Parks has plenty of music and plenty of space to enjoy it in this summer. Aucklanders are urged
to grab some food and friends, and head out to one of the city's beautiful parks to enjoy some top Kiwi music. For more
