Slammin' bands jammin' this Anniversary Weekend
Anniversary Weekend celebrations finish on a high note with slammin' Kiwi bands Steriogram, Nesian Mystik, Goodnight
Nurse, and My Life Story jamming in Pt Chevalier on Monday 30 January.
The Edge Jam in the Park, a free Auckland City-produced concert in association with The Edge 94.2FM, runs from 2pm to
6pm in Coyle Park and is expected to attract a 6,000-strong crowd.
Steriogram, fresh from their summer tour with Elemeno P and Déja Voodoo, have been the big news of the Kiwi music scene
for the past couple of years as they've broken out across the world. They have been nominated for a Grammy and four MTV
awards, exploded onto the UK singles chart with a top 20 debut and their single 'Walkie Talkie Man' was selected to
feature on the worldwide TV campaign for the Apple ipod.
Steriogram formed in 1999 when Brad and Jake, longtime friends from Whangarei, met up with Tim and Tyson who had been
friends for years in Auckland and they started to play shows around the area as a melodic rock four-piece. The band
became more hip-hop influenced when Jared was brought in on drums and Tyson was moved up front to do more rapping.
Steriogram signed to Capitol Records in November 2002 and recorded their debut album Schmack! with producer David Kahne
who has worked with The Strokes, Fishbone, Paul McCartney and Sugar Ray.
Nesian Mystik was founded in the music room of Auckland's Western Springs College in 1999 and is a cultural mix of
Polynesia, bringing together Maori, Tongan, Samoan and Cook Island ancestry. Major breaks for them included playing at
Auckland's Grey Lynn and Pasifika festivals, which gave them a chance to gain audiences and perform with respected
musicians like Che Fu. Their infectious blend of Pasifika-infused R 'n' B and hip-hop saw their 2002 album
'Polysaturated' go four times platinum and they have the unprecedented achievement in recent New Zealand pop history of
having four singles achieve Top Ten status.
Auckland's premier pop-punk group Goodnight Nurse have gone from strength to strength since their beginnings in early
2002. The trio's fast-paced, entertaining live show has ensured them a steadily-growing fanbase and they have become
famed for their patented guitar moves, in particular the 'double behind-the-head guitar special' and the 'lie on the
ground for half the song dance'. Energetic, catchy, loud and melodic, they cite influences such as Frenzal Rhomb, Blink
182, The Ataris, Guttermouth and New Found Glory.Citing influences such as Green Day, Blink 182, Weezer and Sum 41.
Previously known as Nevertheless, the My Life Story pop-rock-punk quartet formed in 2001 while they were at school.
Since then they have enjoyed a constant rise of popularity, spending 2004 touring New Zealand and doing a 10-day mini
tour of Australia. They were selected as the touring band for the 2005 'New Zealand Schools Tour' which saw them play
over 100 shows over a five-month period to thousands of high school students from Invercargill to Whangarei.
Their debut single 'Falling Out' went to the number one position on C4 TV for 2 weeks, number 2 on JuiceTV, Top 20 on
'The Edge' radio station, and it also earned them a performance on 'Top of The Pops. To top it off, the band won the
2005 JuiceTV 'Breakthrough Artist' award and have appeared on the NZ Top Forty show and TVNZ's Breakfast Show.
Auckland City Music in Parks has plenty of music and plenty of space to enjoy it in this summer. Aucklanders are urged
