Dangerous city trees to go during holiday period
Christchurch City Council will remove two dangerous trees in the Central City this month.
“The work has been planned for one of the quietest times of the year to minimise any inconvenience to the public and make it easier to manage people and traffic during the removals,” Christchurch City Council arborist Tony Armstrong said.
First to be removed will be an oak tree by the Montreal Street bridge between Oxford and Cambridge Terraces. “This tree has long been supported by ‘cable-bracing’ but has now failed, showing a large split in its trunk,” Mr Armstrong said
Traffic will be managed in the area surrounding the tree throughout Monday 9 January.
A large Chinese poplar tree by the Hereford St bridge also needs to be felled. Although it is in good leaf, it has a number of faults through it and has a history of large branches breaking. “It will be replaced with a deciduous variety to compliment other trees along the river, opposite the Oxford Tce strip,” Mr Armstrong said
The removal of this tree will involve considerable traffic and site management around it throughout Monday 16 January and Tuesday 17 January. The treework will be carried out by specialist arboricultural contractors engaged by the Council.
“Council arborists will continue to monitor other trees along the Avon River and remove and replace them when required as part of the Council’s ongoing citywide tree replacement programme,” Mr Armstrong said
