Free summer sounds from Auckland City
Top Kiwi musicians are tuning up for Auckland City's free Music in Parks summer concert series, kicking off in January 2006.
For three months the Auckland City Music in Parks series will host 36 free performances in parks all over the city, the suburbs and on Waiheke Island.
The free concerts provide something to suit every taste with a wide variety of musical styles including jazz, classical, blues, soul, contemporary rock and pop, Latin and world music.
The season kicks off with the first Sounds of Summer @ Mission Bay concert on 7 January featuring the hugely popular Goldenhorse, with support from the hi-energy Batucada Sound Machine. Bring your family and friends along to Selwyn Reserve and enjoy this unique concert by the beach, sponsored by The Promenade, Mission Bay.
For an afternoon of chilled out sounds head to Myers Park on 8 January to hear Kora, Sola Rosa, SJD, Open Souls and DJ Aroha.
Take a trip back in time with the Nostalgia Concert on 14 January, set in the gorgeous grounds of Alberton House in Mt Albert. The Auckland Salon Orchestra will be performing an afternoon of Palm Court Music from the early 1900s through to the 1940s.
For those who like their music with a beat, the Dancing in the Street series is back in January, February and March. Headline dance acts including P-Money, Concord Dawn, Havoc and Ladi6 are among those who will perform to massive street parties in closed-to-traffic Lorne Street, in front of the Auckland Central City Library.
Music that spans decades will be revisited in the Solid Gold Saturday series across January, February and March at Tahaki Reserve in Mt Eden. The 60s concert will feature Shane and the Saints, Celine Toner and Tom Sharplin, while iconic hits of the 70s will be brought to life by Hello Sailor and Debbie Harwood. Rock legend Jordan Luck makes a comeback at the 80s concert singing his well-known Exponents hits with help from 80s music connoisseurs Club Nerd.
Waiheke Island gets their share of the sounds with Waiheke's Little Day In on 28 January, while Three Kings Reserve serves up some of the best kiwi rock the country has to offer at Rock the Park on 19 February. Coyle Park in Pt Chevalier also gets in on the action, with The Edge Jam in the Park on 30 January.
Blues is back at Blockhouse Bay, with the Midge Marsden Band performing a blistering set with help from the fabulous Grant Winterburn Experience at Blockhouse Bay Beach Reserve on 3 March.
There couldn't be a festival of music in Auckland without the smooth Latin sounds of Kantuta, who are playing at the second Sounds of Summer @ Mission Bay concert on 4 March, sponsored by The Promenade, Mission Bay. Bring your dancing shoes for a free salsa dance lesson.
Jazz and classical music will be on the menu every Sunday at the Auckland Domain band rotunda, with the Montana Jazz at the Rotunda series and the Drake Concert Series. The Montana Jazz at the Rotunda includes acts such as The Alibis, Four Sisters, the Julie Mason Quintet and the Rodger Fox Big Band. The Drake Concert Series includes performances by Bach Musica New Zealand, Brass Monkeys, Doch and Totally Gourdgeous.
Auckland City Music in Parks has plenty of music and plenty of space to enjoy it in this summer, so grab some food and some friends and head out to one of the city's beautiful parks to enjoy some first class music. Check out www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/mips for more details.
These concerts are produced by Auckland City, with support from Radioworks. They are just some of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City as part of the Ak@Play summer events programme.
