National water ski racing comes to Rotorua
ROTORUA 30.11.05: This weekend the lakefront will roar with the sounds of water ski racing as the sport makes its debut appearance on the shores of Lake Rotorua.
On Saturday and Sunday more than 90 competitors will face the challenging task of skiing behind boats travelling over 120 kph as they compete in the fourth round of the National Series.
Rotorua District Council events manager, Steve Gibling, says this is spectacular event for Rotorua. “We have been working with the national association now for some time and this event offers enormous potential for our city. They have raced in Rotorua before, but never on Lake Rotorua, and this round of racing is going to show the real potential that Lake Rotorua has for such events.”
Emma Duckworth, of the New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association and Chief Judge for the event is also very up beat about staging a round of the series on Lake Rotorua. “Rotorua has an amazing reputation for looking after visitors and it has some great facilities for events. It’s a prime venue for water skiing and we look forward to a testing new course on Lake Rotorua”.
Racing starts at 9am on Saturday morning and continues throughout the day, and through until Sunday afternoon. The boats will be based out on Sulphur Point.
