New Brighton Christmas parade helps celebrate slow road
New Brighton residents and businesses are planning a street party and Christmas parade to coincide with the official opening on Saturday of the one-way slow road through New Brighton Mall.
The Bright ‘n’ Funky Hat parade starts off at 10.30am after Santa’s arrival on a surfboat at 10.15am.
The slow road, which was approved in May, 2004, is part of an overall New Brighton Mall upgrade that aims to revitalise an area which was once the city’s busiest weekend retail centre.
New Brighton businesses are kicking off the event with week-long specials in the run-up to the road opening and a grand prize of a $2000 travel voucher, to be drawn on 24 December in New Brighton Mall. There are many other prizes to be won, including a children’s playhouse
Opening the slow road is one of 11 priorities outlined in the New Brighton Revitalisation Master Plan, the road reintroduces traffic to Seaview Road between Union Street and Oram Avenue. The road will be open for traffic after the opening ceremony.
More FM will compeer the day where the usual market, parade, street party and Santa Claus should make for a great community day out.
